Markha Valley Trekking

Duration : 11 Nights / 12 Days
Destinations : Delhi - Leh - Shey - Tiksey - Spitok - Zinchen - Rumbak - Yurutse - Garba La - Skiu - Markha - Thochuntse - Nimaling - Kongmaru La – Sumdo - Hemis - Leh - Delhi

Markha Valley’s accessibility and beauty have made this the most popular trekking route in Ladakh region & this trail had been followed by monks and villagers for many centuries. The Kongmaru La (5030 m) is the highest pass on this trek and on the way affords great views, south to Zanskar Range and North to the Ladakh Range. This Trek passes through apricot orchards of Kaya, beautiful Markha village on the bank of Markha River, Yak grazing Plains of Nimaling at an altitude of 4700 m dominated by the Kang Yatse (6400m) peak. On the way visit Spitok monastery, one of the oldest in upper Indus and Hemis -- principal monastery having largest Thangka (Tibetan religious cloth painting) in Ladakh, over 12m long, but only exhibited every 12 years. Head monk of Hemis monastery administers all the associated monasteries in the Ladakh and Zanskar region.

Day 01 : Delhi
Arrive Delhi early in the morning and you will be welcomed by Trail Blazers India executive on arrival and transferred to your hotel. (Delhi has seen its rise and fall of many empires and each dynasty of kings has left behind monuments and memories to commemorate the grandeur of bygone days. Very few cities in the world offer such diversity in architectural styles as Delhi. The old city of Delhi today stands as an epitome of the whole history of Indo- Islamic architecture). Afternoon sightseeing tour of Delhi which includes Jama Mosque- the largest mosque in India constructed in 1656, Red Fort- built by Shah Jehan in 1648, Raj Ghat- the cremation site of Mahatma Gandhi, Humayun's Tomb- built in 16th century and the percusor to the Taj Mahal. Drive past Safdarjang Tomb and visit Qutab Minar- a 72-meter high tower believed to be the most perfect tower of the Persian world. The iron pillar in the same complex has not rusted over 1500years. Drive pass Embassy area and see Rastrapati Bhawan- the Presidential Palace, India Gate and the Parliament House. Overnight.

Day 02 : Delhi - Leh
Early morning transfer to the airport to connect flight for Leh. Arrive Leh at 0655 hrs, pickup and transfer to the hotel. Full day free for acclimatization. Overnight.

Day 03 : Leh - Shey - Thiksey
Today visit ancient monasteries of Shey & Thiksey. Meals & overnight at hotel.

Day 04 : Leh - Spitok - Zinchen
Early morning drive to Spituk in 1hr. On arrival visit the Spituk Gompa, built 500 years ago. From here start the trek by crossing a bridge and walking south-west of the river Indus. The gorge section leads to the confluence of Indus and Zinchen. Overnight in a camp near the village of Zinchen.

Day 05 : Zinchen - Rumbak - Yurutse (3900 MTS)
Climbing from Zinchen to Rumbak is a gradual and from here one gets fabulous views of the snow capped Stok Mountains. From Rumbak we move along the Rumbak Nala towards Yurutse. At Yurutse village you will find fields of barley and potatoes. Overnight.

Day 06 : Yurtse - Gabda La - Skiu (3100MTS)
From Yurutse a gradual ascent and then a steep climb you will reach Ganda la (4900 M). From Ganda la views extend south to the Zanskar range and summits of the Himalayan range. From here a long descent takes you to Shingo village. From Shingo the trail heads into a narrow gorge leading towards Skiu. This is a confluence of the rivers coming from Markha valley and Shingo. Overnight.

Day 07 : Skiu - Markha (3800MTS)
Today will be a very pleasant hike, up the Markha valley with the trail crossing numerous streams. Markha is a quaint village with a deserted fort and a small village. Overnight.

Day 08 : Markha - Thochuntse
Today relatively heavily wooded sections of the lower Markha is left behind and One will be required to cross the river several times as there are no bridges here. Enroute Hankar is the highest village in the Markha valley. Overnight in Tents.

Day 09 : Thochuntse - Nimaling (4700 MTS)
Today leave for Nimaling with good path with several small inclines and a series of grassy ridges. Enroute you will see series of Mani walls and chortens. This is one of the most beautiful high valleys in Ladakh and is dominated by the Kangyaze peak. Overnight in Tents.

Day 10 : Nimaling - Kongmaru La (5150 M) – Sumdo
Today cross to the north of the Markha, climbing to the top of the 5,306Mts Kongmaru La, with its wonderful views from the top. There are snow peaks in every direction and on a clear day K2, can be seen on the north-western horizon. The trail descends to the Martselang valley, following the Martselang stream to the village of Sumdo. Overnight.

Day 11 : Sumdo - Hemis (4 Hrs Trek) – Leh
Today morning make an easy descent along the Martselang to where it broadens into the valley of the Indus at Martselang village. Board the awaiting jeep and enroute visit Hemis monastery and then drive to Leh via Shey and Thiksey monastery. Overnight in a tented camp.

Day 12 : Leh - Delhi
In the morning after breakfast transfer to the airport to connectJet flight at 1015 hrs for Delhi. Arrive Delhi at 1130 hrs, pickup and transfer to the International airport for onward connect.
